‘’Is It Safe To Have Sex While I’m Menstruating?’’

Intimacy during the time of the month—how it feels like?

Raise your hands if you’re feeling more sexually aroused and sensitive during those times of the month compared to other common days—I know I do! Truth be told, this type of statement shouldn’t receive a negative eye raised reaction because it is natural for some women to go through a mega horny situation, due to their congestion in the pelvic area—also known as menstrual time. So, the question is, is it safe to perform intimacy while you’re having your period? The answer is.. maybe?

Honestly, there’s a very thin line in between answering yes and no when it comes to this type of question. Let us address the ‘’No’’ first, shall we? First of all, for some women, me included, can experience a rather extra sensitive or mild pain during the time of the month. So it may lead to a sense of uncomfiness and cramping. Second of all, it all depends on the level of gentleness from your partner, too. How rough is the movement? Did the penetration give you pleasure, or the other way around? And most importantly, are they wearing protection? You know your body and your partner better.

And about the ‘’Yes’’, it all leads back to the very last part of the question. If both are you are smart enough to use protection while having sex during your menstrual cycle. Then you both are in the safe zones. Here’s what some of you might not know—it’s crucial to practice safe sex while you’re having your period because you could still get or transmit an STI, like HIV, during this time. The virus may be present in menstrual blood. Therefore, doctors strongly encourage using a condom to decrease this risk. You may also be more prone to some infections in general at this time. Your vagina maintains a pH level of 3.8 to 4.5 throughout the month, but during menstruation, that level rises because of the higher pH level of blood, and yeast is able to grow more rapidly.

But here’s another good thing intakes, having sex while you’re on your period may be beneficial. Because orgasms release endorphins—the feel good hormones like oxytocin and dopamine—in theory they could also decrease some period symptoms. Ha! There’s no harm in trying, right?
