According to the Journal of Psychological Science, there’s a real answer.
Researchers monitored the brain activity of adolescents aged 13 to 18 as they scrolled through their Instagram feeds. They found that receiving “likes” on social media triggered the exact same pleasure sensors in the brain that are stimulated by the likes of chocolate, money and sex.
This means that your psychological response to receiving many “likes” on an Instagram post is similar to how you’d react to more primal pleasure stimuli, like a shirtless Channing Tatum offering you to touch his bangin’ bod.
