Who would have thought that the highly critical judge on America’s Got Talent, whose words could pierce through your soul, could actually survive a long-term relationship? That’s right, we’re talking about the British lad who gives us a bitter-sweet vibe though his comments to aspiring stars, Simon Cowell, who recently popped the big “Will you marry me?” question to his girlfriend and music mogul, Lauren Silverman.
Being under Covid-19 lockdown was a true test of their love and they truly enjoyed each other’s company, which led to Simon proposing to Lauren on Christmas Eve in Barbados.
According to People, the proposal was witnessed by his 7-year-old son, Eric; and Lauren’s eldest child Adam, who is the result of her previous marriage to Andrew Silverman.
A source told The Sun: “Lauren was absolutely stunned and never in a million years expected Simon to pop the question. She burst into tears – happy tears – and obviously said yes straight away.”
It was reported that in 2013, Lauren was expecting her child with Simon, while still being married to her ex. Lauren and Andrew, who are real estate moguls and good friends of Simon, finalized their divorce the following December.
In an interview with The Mirror in 2014, reflecting on how his relationship with Lauren started, Simon admitted that, “It is not something I am proud of or wanted to happen in terms of hurting anyone. It just happened.”
“You have to deal with it and man up to it. You have to accept the responsibility and the criticism,” he continued. “All I can say is, my advice to you is if it happens to you, you just have to deal with it a day at a time and own up to your responsibilities.”
The X-Factor creator previously stated that he “didn’t believe in marriage” and was concerned about what would happen to his fortune if he tied the knot.
Simon, whose net worth is approximately US$600 million, said in 2008 that “I don’t believe in marriage, certainly not in this business.”
“The truth is that you get married and in a year or two, they clean you out! It’s just not going to work.”
In an interview with OK! in November, when asked whether his relationship with Lauren was still alive, he replied, “I guess so! Covid-19 was the real test. Like everyone, we were in lockdown for a long time and that’s when you realize whether or not you actually enjoy each other’s company or not.”
“And we really really did. So to answer your question… yes, the romance is still alive. We’re closer than ever.”
