Hair struggles amongst hijabis are a real thing. Even though our hair is not exposed to the elements, that does not mean we should completely ignore it. Trust me, I understand the trials and tribulations in maintaining one’s mane. As a fellow hijabi, I’ve dealt with some serious issues with my hair – from it being super frizzy to my hair brush getting stuck on my tangled locks.

However, after months of getting to know the state of my hair, I’ve developed a proper hair care routine so that my hair won’t be as horrid as it used to be. Your haircare routine is as important as your skincare routine in order to keep your hair and scalp healthy, even though it’s all covered up by your beautiful hijabs.

If you are new to this and don’t know where to begin, here are some hair care hints for you:

Dry Your Hair

Number one rule: Do Not Wear Your Hijab Under Wet Hair! I understand it’s a hassle to dry your hair before putting on a hijab, but the last thing that you want is damp and limp hair after you take it off. And you certainly don’t want your head to smell funky the entire time you wear your hijab. Also, our scalps are really sensitive and you should not overwhelm it by tying up your wet hair and plopping it on top of your scalp.

My advice: wash your hair the night before. It gives you heaps of time for your hair to dry overnight and you wouldn’t have to worry about your hair being damp. Microfiber towels are great for your hair as well when you want to get rid of excess water after showering. They absorb water easily, so less tugging and pulling on your hair that might cause some breakage if you use a regular towel. You can use a blow dryer if you have one at home, but, use it sparingly, as excessive heat can damage your hair.

Know your hair

Everyone has different types of hair textures – whether curly, wavy, straight or anything in between. Getting to know your hair and scalp is crucial in developing your own haircare routine, because certain hair products work for certain hair types. So, take a good look in the mirror and examine your hair. Touch and feel it to determine its characteristics. Is it too coarse? Is your scalp too oily? Does your hair fall out too easily if you rake your fingers through it?

Too make it even easier for you, make an appointment at a salon of your choice so you can consult with a hairstylist or experts there to understand your hair condition even better. Afterwards, they can recommend products that are suitable for your hair and scalp so that you can add them to your shower and haircare routine.

Invest in silk pillows

Waking up in the morning with perfect hair is a dream that every girl would wish to achieve. But, that dream can turn into your worst nightmare real quick once you look at yourself in the mirror, with your hair all over the place. I’ve even scared myself with my bedhead in the early morning, when I looked like something from The Grudge movie. To avoid that, I now sleep on a silk pillowcase so that my hair would remain in place throughout the night.

Silk pillowcases are great investments for your hair since they cause less friction when you move around all night and keep your hair silky smooth. Compared to the traditional cotton pillowcase, which causes more damage, silk pillowcases bring great benefit to not only your hair but your skin as well.
