Dandruff and itchy scalp are nuisance to those suffering from it. It’s almost impossible to get your hands from itching your head or dusting those hideous white flakes off your shoulders. Putting embarrassment aside, itching your head for a prolonged duration can cause further damage to your scalp. Discovering the underlying root cause for itchy scalp is important to prevent excessive harm to your scalp and hair. You may think that picking up the anti-dandruff shampoo will help mitigate the problem, you might be wrong.

Commercial shampoos and conditioners are loaded with chemicals which may ease your scalp condition in the short term, but they don’t necessarily treat the underlying cause of the dandruff. Chemical shampoos work mostly by reducing the natural fungus on your scalp. Other times, it just slows down the process of how the skin cells die.

What is dandruff anyway? Most often, dandruff is just dry, dead skin cells, according to the Mayo Clinic. The skin flakes off your scalp, leaving you with unsightly white flakes in your hair and sometimes on your shoulders.

Alternatively, if you want take a shot on solving this issue naturally, here are ingredients you can use which are not only safe, but readily available in your kitchen! There hacks are not only convenient, but easy on your pocket as well!

Lemon Juice

Due to its antiseptic properties, lemon juice works well in easing your itchy scalp. Preferably fresh, spray or apply the juice all over your head and leave it on for 5-10 minutes. If your condition is mild, you may mix the juice with some water to reduce the concentration. You can repeat this action on a daily basis and see how your condition improves!

Baking Soda

This is an incredible hack! Baking soda does not only do wonders in cleaning your household, but is a fantastic ingredient for your hair and scalp! The alkaline nature of baking soda helps balance out the pH of your hair and to relieve itchiness. Just make a paste with baking soda and water and rub onto your scalp. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes and then rinse it out.

Coconut oil

The underlying health benefits of coconut oil is aplenty and it is a well-acknowledged remedy to treat various issues for a long time now. Coconut oil is easily available in most grocery stores nowadays, but be sure to purchase an original one. Just massage some oil into your scalp gently and leave it on for a few hours. Letting the oil fuse into your scalp overnight is best option.

Try to find the underlying causes for your dandruff or itchy scalp. Look back at the products you put on your hair, as most cases of itchy scalp is derived from product overuse. These products may not be completely toxic, but could cause irritation with your scalp due to allergic reaction. Be sure to read the ingredients on labels before any usage. After all, it’s your hair and head we’re talking about!
