For meat lovers, there are heaps of fine steakhouses available in the Klang Valley to satisfy your every hankering for a juicy, hearty, mouth-watering slab of good meat. Adding on to that list is BEAST, The BIG Group’s bar and grill, serving the highest quality steaks with a unique dining experience.
Opening its doors in June 2013, the main highlight on the menu is of course, the premium steaks with the choice of Wagyu, Angus, US Prime and more, as well as traditional meals with a dramatic flair. Other exciting and notable dishes include BEAST’s four inspiring burgers, Lobster Mac & Cheese, Whole Roasted Beer Brined Chicken and Grilled Lamb Loin with Thai Mint Pink Peppercorn Sauce.
Having visited other restaurants by The BIG Group, we kind of knew what we were getting ourselves into and had expectations set, and surely, after our recent visit to BEAST, there’s no doubt that we are pretty impressed. Find out more below!
Upon entering its premise, we fell in love with the interior even before we took our seats. Whether it’s a girls night out, date night or a family affair, the stylish and classy decor give off a quiet, intimate and cosy ambiance that’s enjoyable and ideal for everyone from all walks of life. What we really love about the place is the fact that a restaurant of its class, with its uber stylish setting, still allows for a very casual dining experience. It’s very comfortable, laid back and is a great place to chill.
First up, we were served complimentary Beer Bread. Made with Kilkenny beer and only in limited quantities daily, the bread itself is crusty on the outside and fluffy inside. It was a challenge for us to slice the bread as the crust is a little hard, but it’s so worth it. It’s light and there’s a bit of bite to it. The cured butter that comes along with the bread is absolutely to-die-for. It’s salty and flavourful, so much so that we wanted to ask the waitress if the butter is available for sale.
Roasted Bone Marrow, Caramelised Onions, Toasted Brioche (RM28) – This isn’t a starter we would commonly order, but we were pleasantly surprised. Usually, if not prepared properly, bone marrow has a funky flavour which is an acquired taste. On the other hand, BEAST’s version was simply enjoyable. We were given a little spoon to scoop out the bone marrow and it was eaten with the toasted brioche as well as caramelised onions served with the dish. This is a really good combo as the sweetness of the onions and crunch from the brioche balances out the taste of the bone marrow. The serving of the bone marrow is pretty small though and we suggest sharing this only between two to three people.
US Prime Striploin (RM45 per 100g) – Word has it that the secret behind BEAST’s flavourful food is the chefs’ JOSPER oven – a combination of a grill and oven – which works on 100% charcoal to trap in flavours and tenderness of the meat. The steaks were the main reason why we chose to visit BEAST in the first place, so when our medium rare 200g US Prime striploin was served, we were beyond excited.
On the outside, the slab of meat was nicely charred to our liking, with a little crust here and there for that extra burst of flavour. Upon slicing our steak, we could already tell that the meat was juicy and succulent, judging by the amount of beef fluids coming out of our steak. The cooking of the meat was executed well to our desired doneness, with a slightly pink centre. The steak was very well-seasoned, and each bite was fatty and flavourful. We really enjoyed the charred bits of the steak and the meat itself was moist, tender and delicious.
The steaks at BEAST are also served with a choice of natural beef jus or bone marrow, as well as three kinds of mustard – English, Dijon and Wholegrain. We went for the natural beef jus and tried all the three mustards available. The natural beef jus complements the taste of the meat, but we preferred the meat on its own to enjoy its fine flavour. The mustards were nothing to shout about and they were too strong for our liking.
All the steaks at BEAST do not come with sides, so you’d have to order those separately from the menu.
Mac & Cheese (RM25) – Now, this is a side we were really looking forward to. Mac & cheese is such a classic favourite, but it’s so easy to mess up. If you’re not a cheese lover, you wouldn’t fancy this at all. But if you are, it will blow your mind. When the dish arrived, it was bubbling slightly at the top, with a layer of melty cheese and browned bits. When we dug our spoon into the pan, we could already tell that it was looking good. This is a no-frills, straight up cheesy, gooey and extremely indulgent version of the dish. There was no meat or vegetables in it, so all we could taste was the authentic flavour of the cheeses used. Super sinful and yummy, we also loved that the macaroni wasn’t overcooked and soft. Instead, it was al dente and firm to the bite. We enjoyed every bit of this. Eat it quick though, as the dish wouldn’t be as heavenly if it turns cold.
Sugar Snap Salad, Shallot and Honey Dressing (RM18) -For the reason that our meal was so savoury and heavy, we added a salad to our meal. We weren’t really sure about it, but the waitress recommended this so we decided to give it a go. The vegetable itself is light and crunchy, hence it makes the perfect salad for those who aren’t a fan of green, leafy vegetables. This salad was sweet and savoury at the same time, very refreshing compared to the rest of our meal, but there was nothing very special about it.
Sticky Date Pudding in Butterscotch (RM25) – Again, like the bone marrow dish, this dessert isn’t something we’d typically select from a menu but it was delectable and was the perfect end to our meal. When it was served, we had the impression that this dessert would be sickly sweet as the pudding was served with butterscotch sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It wasn’t though. The pudding itself was less sweet, so the level of sweetness was just nice when eaten with the butterscotch sauce, ice cream and the little chunks of honeycomb served on the side. The portion is great for sharing between two to three people.
Service here is top-notch. The friendly waiters and waitresses are always there to serve you quickly, and they are also very helpful. At BEAST, it’s not just about the food, it’s about the whole dining experience that’s memorable, and for us, it sure was.
