Want to spice up your bedroom or living room with some bright decor? We’ll show you how you can create this inexpensive and easy DIY ombre canvas art for display! You can personalize it however you like and choose whatever its going to say, according to your personality, style and preference. For a positive everyday mantra, we went ahead with ‘Live in the moment’!
You’ll need:
- A square canvas panel
- your desired quote or saying printed on paper
- wax paper
- acrylic paint
- scissors
- a pencil
- long ruler
- an iron
- a foam brush
- a fine tip brush
You can get the canvas panel from any craft or art stores near you and as for the wax paper, it will be available at any grocery stores or supermarkets. Just ask for kertas bungkus nasi lemak!
1. Firstly, open up a Word document and type in your quote. For a big and bold font, we used Arial in bold. Depending on the size of your canvas, adjust the font size accordingly. Then, print the letterings out.
2. Cut them out and trace the letters on the wax paper. Make sure that the waxy side is at the bottom.
3. Cut all the letters out! You want to make sure that all the letters are precise and neat.
4. Using a long ruler, a pencil and your canvas, measure and place your cut-out letters on the canvas where you want the words to be.
5. Place an iron on a low heat setting on the letters for one and a half minutes. The heat will melt the wax and your letters will adhere to the canvas.
6. Your canvas is now ready to be painted!
7. To do an ombre with acrylic paint, you should always start with the darkest colour you’re going to use. We have chosen to go with the colours of a sunset, so our darkest colour would be a burnt orangey red. Working upwards, we painted about two inches of the canvas with the darkest colour. Then, mix that colour with some yellow to get a lighter orange shade and continue to paint two inches above the first colour, making sure that both the colours overlap and blend in the middle.
8. Continue mixing more yellow into the paint to get lighter shades and finish up your entire canvas. We painted more yellow on top left hand corner of the canvas to make it look like the sun is shining through.
9. Leave your canvas to dry for about 20 minutes and you can start peeling off your letters.
10. This is how the canvas should look like once your letters are peeled off. As you can see, some paint has seeped through the wax paper and it is not perfectly neat.
11. So, to conceal the mess, we just used a fine tip brush dipped in some white acrylic paint to cover the stains. Ta-da! Your canvas art is now complete!
