How does one spot a fake friend? They’re often insincere, and with insincerity, comes betrayal and deceit. There are just as many genuine friends as there are fake ones, so here are four simple tell-tale signs that will indicate just how true your friend is to you.
1. She is Self-centered
A selfish friend is one who hopes for the world to come rolling down to her aid, but is oblivious to your need. They call you, talk about their problems or need something, and they’re sometimes very unapologetic about it. But when you’re in need of their help, they look into how you’re going to repay them, or else they’re not going to bother giving a hand. If this is what your friend is like, ditch her!
2. They’re Stirring the Gossip Pot
If you know someone whose always gossiping about others, there’s a higher chance they’re gossiping about you too. Gossip in general is awful. You’ve seen Mean Girls, right? A genuine friend is not one to spread rumors, and neither would they allow others to talk about you or anyone they care for in a negative way. If you’ve got a friend who stands up for everyone, she’s surely a keeper.
3. Competitiveness
There are people who make friends purely to make themselves look better. A little healthy competition is good, but when it gets a little too passive-aggressive, it might cause a lot of problems. Situations of these signs could be from the clothes that she wears (trying to look like yours), competing with the things you like, or even how much you know. Competitive friends will go out of their way just to prove to others how better off they are, in hopes to make themselves feel better by belittling you.
4. They’re Never Happy For You
Jealousy, as we call it, can be a real pitfall in a friendship. Some friends will fake their happiness for you, but some will go their way to let you know just how unhappy they are with the good things in your life. Say you’ve recently earned an award at work, and when you tell your friend just how happy you are, she will only tell you that anyone could’ve gotten it. She’ll simply make up excuses for your success, and that is something you really do not want in a friend.
