You know Ramadan is around the corner when F&B establishments are busy planning iftar dinners for the coming month. Ramadan is a time for introspection and repentance, but it’s also a month for celebrations and feasting – a self-reward with a well-deserved dinner after a long day of fasting. And in KL, you won’t be disappointed when it comes to iftar selections. There are just so many Ramadan specials, buffets and special sets on offer that you’ll be spoiled for choice throughout the month.
This year, be transported back to the ‘kampung’ while breaking fast on a unique selection of Malay cuisine at a dining establishment named by none other than CNN as the Best New Restaurant in Asia. The Chow Kit – an Ormond Hotel is looking forward to welcoming Ramadhan – The Chow Kit Kitchen has laid out a magnificent menu, Citarasa Ramadhan, specifically developed by the hotel’s culinary talents.
Citarasa Ramadhan will be available at the award-winning restaurant from 3rd April to 2nd May 2022. The iftar feast is a variety of delectable dishes influenced by homey flavours and served in a ‘dulang‘ style. To start with, there’s a traditional portion of sweet Malay kuih muih and red dates, followed by charcoal grilled Satay Ayam with a sweet and sour peanut sauce and Cucur Udang, deep-fried tiger prawns with a chilli plum sauce.
The main courses include the Curry Udang, which features tiger prawns cooked in a fragrant coconut curry with lady fingers, tomatoes, and tofu pok; and the Rendang Dendeng, which is a traditional braised beef tenderloin in an aromatic rendang sauce with kaffir lime and kerisik. The Burung Puyuh Berempah, Asian-spiced marinated quail, deep-fried to golden perfection and sprinkled with crispy curry leaves, is next on the menu.
Then there’s the Golden Sea Bass, which is a whole sea bass that’s been deep-fried and served with a sweet, sour, and spicy mango salsa. A variety of vegetables provides relief from the juicy and delicious meat. Tempoyak Daun Kayu, slow-cooked pucuk ubi leaves in fermented durian combined with creamy coconut milk, and Kacang Botol Sambal Belacan, stir-fried four-angled beans in spicy dried shrimp paste topped with crispy shallots, are two options customers can choose from.
Saffron Rice will be provided as a side dish to complement the main courses. A dessert is a must-have to round out the dinner, so we’ve included a classic favourite in the mix: Royal Pudding. The velvety egg custard is served on a bed of caramelized banana slices, with prunes, candied cherries, and cashew nuts on top. Teh Tarik is offered at the conclusion of the dinner, while Honey Chrysanthemum Tea is served throughout the meal.
The Citarasa Ramadhan will be available for small parties of 2 to 3 people for RM250, and families of 4 to 5 people for RM450. Add-on choices are available for those in larger parties, or who simply want to try more delicacies on the unique menu, such as the delicious Flower Crab Curry for RM80 and aromatic Mutton Soup for RM30.
Last, but not least, there’s the Berbuka Tiffin, a takeaway option for 2 to 3 diners, who would prefer to break their fast in the comfort of their own homes or to send a gift to a loved one. Rendang Dendeng, Assam Fish Tenggiri, Nyonya Kari Kapitan, Nasi Ulam, Tempeh Chips, and The Chow Kit’s famous sambal are wrapped in lovely tiffin boxes and accompanied by 2 bottles of Honey Chrysanthemum Tea, all for RM165.
