If you love YOU, The Girl On The Train, Clickbait, or any other movie or TV series that makes you break out in goosebumps all over, then good news – we have a new show for you to add to your must-watch list: The Girl Before. We guarantee that this psychological thriller will send shivers down your spine and glue your behind to the edge of your seat!
The Girl Before follows Jane (Mbatha-Rawnd) who has found a beautiful minimalist home in London, designed by enigmatic architect, Edward Monkford (David Oyelowo), to rent. Though the price is too good to be true, there is a list of strange rules that Jane must abide by. The list includes no pictures or ornaments, no books and no children, and she even gets a lovely housekeeper system that gathers information on “the user experience”. Sounds weird? There’s more. She also discovers that something strange happened to the girl who rented the house before her – a girl who also happens to be deceased.
The Girl Before is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by J.P. Delaney. According to the author, he realized that the detailed backstories and traumatic pasts that the characters have in his novel are, in a way, related to events in his personal life. He said, ‘’As I wrote that crucial scene, something extraordinary happened. I realized the connection I felt with this book was because my partner and I had also lost a child – to cot death, rather than stillbirth, many years previously.’’
“At some deep, unanticipated level, I had been using the various drafts of this story to work through what had happened to [my partner and I]. The perfect life we’d once thought we were going to have; the picture-postcard family; all replaced by something quite different but no less wonderful,” he continued. “Once I’d realized that, the book wrote itself.”
