If you’re reading this, I bet you’re one of those people who go shopping biweekly for new outfits when you already have a closet FULL of clothes (like me 🙈) and you only wear half of what you have while the rest just stay hidden in piles under piles. I know, I know, I’m picky about my outfits too, but I recently stumbled upon a teeny weeny revelation: I bet I could find a couple of things that I could upcycle to make it look brand new! Besides, upcycling is environment-friendly and could be your first step to leading a sustainable lifestyle. Don’t worry, none of these tips will require a sewing machine or any sewing for that matter – so without further ado, here are 3 DIY tips to upcycle your old clothes!
Put a Pin In It!
Super easy yet stylish asf, all you need is an old tank top and a load of safety pins. Take your tank top and draw out where you want to create a gap, and if it’s too long, go ahead and cut it in half to create a crop top. Once you’ve got it all sketched out, cut down the line with a pair of scissors and start pinning the hems together with your safety pins. Now you’ve got yourself a little tank top with an edgy twist to it! For clearer directions, follow the tutorial below.
Cut It Out!
Who knew a pair of tights/leggings could be upcycled into a shirt?? Cut out a little hemisphere at the crotch area to create a hole for where your head goes in and for the next part you can put it on before you continue cutting but be careful not to cut yourself! You can follow the tutorial in the TikTok video below, or search for more tutorials on YouTube.

Shoelace String Hack
Probably the easiest hack on this list, all it takes you is just an old shoestring and your fav pair of jeans! Flare pants with the little tie-around-the-waist concept are so in thanks to – once again – Alexa Demie’s influence. So you start off by looping the shoestring around the button of your jeans and button up, then tie around your waist level to create that G-string effect and you’re good to go!
