Pet owning is a joy for anyone needing companionship. Pets are the purest souls there are on earth. They are Instagram and TikTok worthy, with their antics and curiosity. However, owning a pet means a lifetime commitment, as they need a lot of care and could live up to 10-15 years. But a lot of dogs and cats end up being strays due to abandonment by their owners. Which begs the question, are you qualified to have a pet?
The answer is yes – everyone is qualified to have a pet. But not all of you are committed to raising them to fully grown adult dogs or cats. If you are considering getting a pet, always research the breed of dog, cat, rabbit, etc. you are planning to get as your fur baby. Each breed of animal has different lifestyle requirements.
For example, dog breeds such as Pugs and Basset Hounds are much more suitable for those who have a busy lifestyle. While breeds like K.C. Spaniels and Labradors are much more suited for those who are flexible with their lifestyle.
The next consideration you need to think about before getting a pet is, can you afford one? Having a pet can be expensive. If you own a dog or cat, you can’t escape spending money on food, grooming, toys, and medical care and treatment. If you are not financially stable and still want to have a furry friend, you can always visit a dog or cat cafe for the time being.
A major factor in pet abandonment is disobedient pets. Pet training could be hard, as you need a lot of time and patience to teach them how to follow basic orders like – sit, stay, yes, no. Not to mention toilet training as well – if you don’t have the patience and time to train your pets, don’t abandon them by the roadside. You can enroll yourself and your fur baby in a dog school or cat school to get them educated on the basics.
Always remember to think about your lifestyle before deciding to have a pet for yourself – not to mention always opt for adopting one rather than buying one. Do keep in mind that once you’ve got a pet, you are signed on for life to be by their side until the end of the line.
