It’s not a unique situation to find yourself in the uncomfortable position of wanting to say ‘no’ to someone – but can’t. For instance, if someone were to request that you do something even when you have your plate full; or a sketchy guy approaches you wanting to start a conversation – and all you want to do is get away.

However, it’s not that easy to say no, point-blank. Truthfully, saying no is always easier said than done. But mustering up the courage for when you want to stand up for yourself is all worth it in the end. If you are looking for ways to say no, here are some tips on how to say no assertively:

Be Bold But Polite

It’s inevitable that saying no will somewhat hurt the other person’s feelings. But, it doesn’t have to always be that way. With a more apologetic tone, while still maintaining your stance, your message will come out clearer. You get to say no all while still taking care of the feelings of the other person.

Stand Your Ground

If one refuses to acknowledge your refusal, they most likely don’t appreciate and value you as a person. Keep your cool and don’t feel obligated to give in simply because the other person is agitated.

Be Less Considerate

As selfish as it sounds, you should always prioritize your best interests. Not those of the individual who has approached you with a request or keeps pestering you to go out with them. In the long run, you’ll discover that your work might suffer and there could be some animosity growing.

Say It Directly

In the end, it’s best to not beat around the bush and just say no, instead of making some flimsy explanations. The fewer words, the better. If they still keep bothering you, just give a brief explanation. It’s better to not over-explain yourself, because they may find loopholes and continue to ask for your help.
