The Unicode Consortium has reportedly approved 72 new emoji and the new images will add to the 1,601 already in existence.
The emoji include facial expressions to hand symbols, animals, objects and food like bacon, plus some sports and medal-style glyphs that are unveiled just in time for the Rio Olympics. There is also a selfie emoji featuring an outstretched arm and phone.
Although these emoji will be adopted by Unicode in June, smartphone users will have to wait for an update from the respective manufacturers. The new emoji could be introduced with iOS10 and Android N, which are due to be released later this year.
Due to pressure from Apple, the Unicode Consortium will not be including a rifle emoji.
