Fears over flight safety intensified on Monday when news broke that a passenger on board a Dragonair flight to Penang in March was caught impersonating a pilot.
The incident, which apparently took place on March 31 on flight KA691 to Penang, was brought to light by one of the chairpersons of the carrier’s flight attendants association.
The man, believed to be 18 to 20 years old, wore a pilot outfit – a white shirt with shoulder epaulettes, black trousers and a necktie – as he headed towards the airport’s boarding gate. He also had luggage tags and a lanyard that had logos of Cathay Pacific, Dragonair’s parent company.
He told staff that he just piloted a flight from San Francisco and asked to speak to the pilot after the plane arrived at Penang. After he tried to order a Bloody Mary, flight attendants became suspicious as there was no such drink on the menu. He failed to provide a staff number, and the flight attendants made sure he never got near the cockpit.
Upon landing, he was taken away by security staff while the aircraft was searched overnight. It is believed that this wasn’t the first time he impersonated a pilot..
We hope he’s gotten arrested!
