WHAT?!!
According to an analysis done across a few eateries in Petaling Jaya, it turns out that your mutton curry or varuval may NOT contain actual goat meat.
The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) confirmed that they had taken samples from both Indian and Indian-Muslim restaurants and they were sent to the Chemistry Department for animal DNA tests.
10 samples were taken from nine restaurants and four restaurants out of nine tested negative for goat DNA. A second analysis which is currently ongoing will determine the exact animal DNA of those samples. Legal action will be taken against the eateries when the results for the second DNA test are revealed.
The plausible cause for this is that the supply of local mutton is very limited and the price for the meat is exorbitant. In 2010, imported mutton was hitting RM17 a kilo, and clearly, that has gone up by now. Australian mutton retail for RM25 per kilo for wholesale, and local mutton is RM40 per kilo.
If found guilty, the eateries will be charged under Section 14 of the Food Act 1983, which restricts against selling food not of the nature, substance or quality demanded.
We’re definitely feeling fooled!
