Although it has lost a little of its culture throughout the years, Chinatown is still one of KL’s most bustling areas, filled with tons to see and lots to eat. Its central location also makes it the perfect spot for backpackers to hang around and stay. Like the rest of the Klang Valley, plenty of cafes are mushrooming in Chinatown and they are getting more popular as the word goes around. Check these cafes out on your next visit to Petaling Street:
1. Coffee Amo – Located along Jalan Sultan, Coffee Amo provides an awesome ambience to simply chill and relax with a cuppa. We highly recommend the Rum Raisin Cheesecake that packs a punch and is super yummy! Coffee Amo has also announced that the extra costs from GST would fully be absorbed.
2. The Front Door – One floor below a backpacker’s inn, The Front Door is truly a rustic gem. The pared-down yet charming interior makes the perfect setting for customers to enjoy the cafe’s popular open-faced sandwiches. You can choose between savoury or sweet flavours and our ultimate favourite would be mozzarella with apple slices, topped with almond flakes and salted caramel.
3. Einstein Cafe – This cafe is strictly vegetarian, but the flavours aren’t compromised. With the monochromatic and well-decorated interior, the pizza, pastas, delicious rice dishes and cakes offered on its menu makes every visit to the cafe worthwhile. Einstein is also currently offering math tuition classes so do visit the cafe for more details.
4. Aku Cafe & Gallery – Located on Jalan Panggong, Aku Cafe & Gallery is put together by a Malaysian film producer for creative people to meet and exchange ideas. With a simple and no-nonsense menu as well as excellent coffee, many events related to music, film and food are sometimes held at the cafe’s tranquil space. Many artworks by local and international artists are also displayed inside the cafe.
5. Yum Cha – Aptly named Yum Cha, which means “having tea” in Cantonese, this cafe and diner is located above a gift shop along Jalan Petaling. Serving superb coffee and a good selection of Asian and Western fare, everything offered at Yum Cha is very affordably priced, which is ideal for backpackers and students alike.
6. Lucy in the Sky – This cafe has been around for more than a year now and is nestled along Jalan Tun H.S. Lee. Offering all-day breakfast, pastas, rice dishes and sandwiches, we instantly fell in love with Lucy in the Sky as we stepped into the cafe. The dim lights, exposed brick walls and glass ceiling creates a very cosy atmosphere.
7. LOKL Coffee Co – Started in 2012 by Malaysian sweetheart Cheryl Samad, LOKL is a neat cafe located on Jalan Tun H.S. Lee. The prices are a little steeper compared to the other cafes nearby Chinatown, but do know that the food and drinks served are of premium quality. Whether you fancy a simple salad, delectable cupcakes or a hearty plate of pasta, LOKL would definitely satisfy.
