As a kid and like most of them, I had a lot of toys but my favourite was always Barbie. What is it about her? Well, for one, she seemed to have her priorities in check. She was also beautiful, fun, and stylish no matter what the occasion is. For years and years, Barbie inspired young girls and grown ups alike.
Barbie may have had some controversy about her figure but if you look past that, you can see that Barbie taught us all plenty of things! Here are some of those things she taught us:
You can be anything you want – No other advice is better than this one for young girls growing up. You should be encouraged to be all the things you want to be and Barbie did exactly that. She was a vet, a singer, an astronaut, you name it, she was it. There was no limit to what she could be and there shouldn’t be a limit for young girls either.
Dress for success – Not to say that looks are everything but Barbie sure did teach us that you should always present yourself well. No matter what you are doing, you should always make an effort to look your best because it will make you feel good. And feeling good about what you do will essentially channel into the kind of effort you put into what you’re doing.
You can never have enough clothes – If there’s one thing I learned from all those years I spent collecting Barbie’s best garments and giving my favourite doll various fashion makeovers is that you can never have enough clothes. She may be the root of my shopping problem but blondie sure knows the importance of having a killer wardrobe!
Flaunt what you have – Barbie taught me to work with what I have got. Many people condemn Barbie for her small waist and pretty looks but she’s just a doll. Long and blonde may have been Barbie’s staple but she was not afraid to switch to a darker ‘do from time to time. She taught us to not shy away from change because it’s not always a bad thing.
Be your own superwoman – Sure, Barbie had Ken but he was never the centre of attention in Barbie’s world. Her hobbies and interests were the major role players in her life. This is what all girls should be taught: boys can be fun to have around sometimes but what matters most is what you aspire to be in life. You shouldn’t ever lose sight of that and thank goodness for Barbie, because she was living proof that you can be anything you want to be.
