Modern console games and phone apps are pretty awesome, but nothing beats the old-school board games we grew up with. Before technology took over our lives, there was a point in time when we all loved and appreciated the idea of spending hours sitting around a board game devising a strategy or rolling dice to determine our next move. Some of these board games have had makeovers and are still available for sale, but the older versions are the best versions. Here are some of our favourites:
1. Monopoly – Who can forget the classic Monopoly? It’s so time-consuming and yet, it gets more fun as the game goes on. With more and more properties being owned, the chances of landing on them and having to pay a hefty fine gets even higher, driving players into bankruptcy. If luck is on your side, you will reign the richest in wealth and property.
2. Master Mind – This mind-boggling game has such a simple concept and it’s fun for all ages. A player develops a hidden code with coloured pegs and the other players are supposed to decode it by trying to guess the pattern, in correct order and colour. You’ll really have to crack your head for this one!
3. Guess Who? – This is a fun game that starts off with each player selecting a card of their choice. These cards represent the characters on the game board and your opponent is supposed to ask yes or no questions to figure out which character your card represents. After every question is answered, the player flips down the characters on the game board until the final one is left.
4. Battleship – The game consists of two boards; one to arrange the ships and the other to record shots made by the opponent. Each player arranges the ships at random on the board and tries to shoot down the opponent’s ships by targeting a position on the grid. The first player who shoots down all the opponent’s ships wins the game.
5. Game of Life – With every move, players get to travel through a series of life achievements. The players go from college to the working world, get married and have children. You’d also have bills and other commitments to pay for. The best feeling in the entire world is when you get to fill your little plastic car with a husband/wife or children with little plastic humans to complete your family!
6. Twister – If you haven’t played Twister, you’ve definitely been missing out. Consisting of a big plastic mat with coloured circles and a spinner, players take turns to determine where on the mat they should place their hand or foot. The player must position himself correctly and hold that position until his next turn. After a while, the players get entangled and it gets hilarious!
7. Risk – The ultimate aim of this board game is to take control of all the territories on the map and eliminate the other players. With the troops in place, the players can attack and claim the territories of their opponents by employing tactics on the map while fortifying their own army. The game goes on until one last player is left.
8. Upwords – Upwords is similar to Scrabble, but with a twist. The letters can be stacked onto other letters that are already on the game board and the higher the stack of letters, the more points are scored. The game gets more intense as it goes on and it gets tougher.
