You know what’s worse than dry hair? Dry scalp and dandruff. Nothing is more infuriating than being all ready in your little black dress to head out for the night until you realize you’ve got these unsightly white flakes on your shoulders. So, how can you fight these so-not-sex flakes and have a healthy and dandruff-free scalp?

Start at the root of your problem – See, there are two main types of dandruff: pityriasis steatoide and pityiaris capitis simplex. The first one is greasy and waxy that creates a crust on your scalp if mixed with sebum. If you have this type of dandruff, it’s probably a good idea that you seek the help of a physician. The other type is usually caused by poor diet or not having good hygiene. Stress can also contribute to this thinner, more dry and itchier flakes. But with this type of dandruff, you can go to any pharmacy and buy some over-the-counter treatment.

Work with a clean brush/comb – Just like you would with your makeup brushes, you should also wash and sanitize your hair-care tools to avoid them from being overloaded with yucky germs. So, if you want to avoid dandruff then you should definitely be doing this. After removing all the hair that’s stuck in your brush, wash it with dish soap and then let it sit in a bowl of warm water mixed with white vinegar. Do this for half an hour and then rinse. Repeat this method every two to three weeks.

Opt for medicated shampoo – If you’re facing a dandruff problem, you might want to choose a shampoo that has zinc in its formula as this mineral is equipped with antibacterial properties, which slows down flaking.

Get your vitamins – To ensure that you get all the right nutrients, you should be eating food that’s rich in vitamins A, B, and C, which can help keep your scalp in good health. If you can’t seem to eat all the food with all three nutrients, why not make a smoothie? They’re delicious and always good to have on-the-go.
