World Diabetes Day is today and if you think you’re not affected by this disease, think again. The National Health and Morbidity Surveys in 2011 estimated that approximately 2.6 million Malaysian adults are affected by diabetes so it’s probably safe to say you know someone who is living with diabetes. Malaysia has one of the highest rates of diabetes in the world and has been predicted to increase to 4.5 million by 2020.
Although campaigns and public service announcements has been made on the topic of diabetes, Malaysians often ignore the subject until it affects them, which by then, becomes too late. Factors such as diet, specialised nutrition and exercise are imperative to the management of diabetes.
