A policeman’s job is to serve and protect not to cause harm.
Kosmo! reported that a teenage girl was rape five years ago by a former policeman and the Sessions Court in Kota Baru sentenced him to 15 years in prison and eight strokes of the rotan.
In passing the sentence, judge Mohd Yusoff Yunus said the prosecution had successfully proven beyond reasonable doubt that the accused was guilty of the crime.
Sgt-Major Mahmad Bidin, 57, was found guilty of raping a 14-year-old girl in his office at the Binjai police station at 2.30pm on Oct 15, 2009. He was the officer in charge of the station.
He has since been suspended.
Defence counsel Datuk Sukri Mohamed pleaded for a lenient sentence as the accused had a family and school-going children to support, but Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Salam Yusof urged the judge to consider the public interest factor.
The accused, who had served in the police force for over 30 years, will be appealing against the decision at the High Court.
