Every so often, I find myself falling in love with a TV or movie character. Ladies, you know what I’m talking about. When a sensitive and smart character woos the leading lady, you cannot help but wish that it was you that Noah from The Notebook said, “It wasn’t over, it still isn’t over,” to. I’m not a fan of playing favourites, so instead of a countdown, here are the top 8 fictional boyfriends that I can’t help but sometimes wish was my own.
1. Aidan Shaw played by John Corbett
Where was he from: Sex and the City
Why he’s lovable: What is there not to love about a man that can carve you beautiful furniture? Screw, IKEA. Aidan Shaw is whom you would want as a partner and to furnish your home. Not only was he admirably sensitive and in-tune with what Carrie wanted but he also had a big heart. I mean, come on, the man forgave her for cheating on him with Mr. Big and he was willing to look past her horrendous sense of fashion.
Best line: “I love you, Carrie. There’s no one I could love more. I want to live my life with you.”
2. Romeo Capulet played by Leonardo DiCaprio
Where was he from: Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet
Why he’s lovable: Besides the fact that I may be biased as I’m a massive fan of Leo, he did an amazing job of Romeo. Had anyone else played this famous Shakespearean character, he might have made Romeo look like a total psycho-sissy boy. But not Leo. Oh no. He did such good work that you didn’t actually mind the crying and balcony-climbing. I would love to have been Juliet when they had a stare-off with that aquarium in between them. Nothing screams romance like a stare-off does. When he tearfully yelled at Tybalt, “Either thou, or I, or both must go with him”, I knew he was meant for an Oscar.
Best line: “My life were better ended by their hate than death prorogued, wanting of thy love.”
3. Noah Calhoun played by Ryan Gosling
Where was he from: The Notebook
Why he’s lovable: You didn’t think I’d make it through this list without putting the extremely and undoubtedly one of the most romantic leading man there ever was did you? He risked his life on the Ferris wheel just to get a date out of Rachel McAdam’s character for goodness sake! If that is not enough to make him worthy of being on this list, he also built her dream house whilst donning that sexy beard. If that doesn’t do it for you, then I don’t know what will.
Best line: “So it’s not gonna be easy. It’s gonna be really hard. We’re gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, for ever, you and me, every day.”
4. Jackson Teller played by Charlie Hunnam
Where was he from: Sons of Anarchy
Why he’s lovable: Not many will agree with me when it comes to this candidate, but I found Jax Teller extremely attractive, like, I’m-going-to-need-a-towel-to-wipe-my-seat kind of hot. Besides the fact that he has wispy blonde hair, smouldering gray eyes, and a very nice behind (which you get to see plenty of in the series), Jax also has a journal. This Harley-riding, tattooed hottie keeps track of his feelings and write poems. The whole crazy mother and running off to do things like kill people might be off-putting, but I’m willing to overlook that. Wouldn’t you?
Best line: “Hey, I killed a Fed for you. Nothing says endless love like capital murder.”
5. Lieutenant/Lieutenant Commander Alex Hopper played by Taylor Kitsch
Where was he from: Battleship
Why he’s lovable: Sure, he was undisciplined but he saved the world from scary robots and was totally focused when put under pressure by the fact that he was the only one left in command. He didn’t even have time to grieve over his brother’s death! Also, he understood how important a chicken burrito is to a hungry girl. He was willing to trespass and also received an electroshock from a Taser in the process of getting Brooklyn Decker’s character the food she wanted. I think that’s a win on it’s own. I don’t care if you save the world or not but if you get me food, we can be together. Forever.
Best line: “Your daughter is the best thing that has happened to me in my entire life. It would be an honor to have your permission to marry her.”
6. Jackson Avery played by Jesse Williams
Where was he from: Grey’s Anatomy
Why he’s lovable: Unlike most, I didn’t think McDreamy was the best-looking character on Grey’s Anatomy. If it were up to me, that title should have been kept for Jesse Williams when he joined the cast as Jackson Avery. What made him stand out the most was the fact that he kept on fighting for April even when she was too blind to see that he wanted more than just a casual fling. Super-sensitive surgeon with beautiful eyes? Yes, please!
Best line: “I love you. I always have. I love everything about you – even the things I don’t like, I love. And I want you with me. I love you and I think that you love me, too. Do you?”
7. Landon Carter played by Shane West
Where was he from: A Walk To Remember
Why he’s lovable: Any movie that is based on a Nicholas Spark novel will surely have a man that is the perfect romantic you never knew you wanted. A Walk remember introduced to us Landon Carter, your typical bad boy that eventually showed his true colours when he fell in love with dying Jamie Sullivan played by Mandy Moore. When he ticked off every single wish on her bucket list, including where she wanted to be in two places at once, you couldn’t help but tear a little. He even married her, knowing that their love didn’t have much time left. What a champ!
Best line: “Do you love me? Will you do something for me, then? Will you marry me?”
8. Beast (Prince Adam) voiced by Robby Benson
Where was he from: Disney’s Beauty and the Beast
Why he’s lovable: He had a palace with a massive library and talking household appliances that would randomly break out into songs. What’s not to love about that? I’m almost certain that all that hair on him would have sent most girls running for the hills, but not me. I see past all that fur and just completely get lost in his piercing blue eyes. Unlike Belle, I wouldn’t have had the core strength to carry his injured self onto a horse, but that doesn’t mean I love this big softy any less than she does.
Best line: “I want to do something for her… but what?”
