Always wanted a Hawaiian gateway? Picture this, sipping Mai Tais with a Malaysian twist in a Tiki Themed Bar? Have I gotten your attention yet? Head on down to the Tiki themed rooftop Mai Bar located at Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral and brace yourself for an exciting experience in a fun and open atmosphere.
With a one of a kind centrepiece, the elongated lavalicious bar is set in black, lit with red LED lights to represent the pacific rim is complemented with vibrant red and dark wood seating. Tiki themed paintings and a great Kuala Lumpur city skyline view enhances the party ambiance further. Australian artist, Tony Twigg’s sculptural artwork titled “Five sticks in any order”, inspired by the fishing trap can also be found here. 165 of these sticks have been applied to 26 pivot doors that open to Splash – the hotel’s poolside. At the far end, sits the Freek Lounge – an exclusive lounge for those who indulge in cigars.
We were lucky enough to have tasted Mai Bar’s cocktails created by Joseph Boroski, a mixultant (mixologist cum consultant), owner of bar consulting group – Sip Slowly and the founder of BAR:School, a complete bar and cocktail training “bar-university” for bartenders and cocktail-making enthusiasts. Apart from the traditional cocktails, you will also find locally infused cocktails on the menu such as Green Paradise and Around the World.
Malaysian Princess Mai Tai
To start it off, Mai Bar’s signature cocktail, the Malaysian Princess Mai Tai – a concoction of silver rum pressed with blueberries and kaffir lime, topped with golden rum, pineapple and orange juices, and served in a Tiki-themed mug. This could be either the drink that starts up the night or the drink you want to go home with.
Asam Boi
Next up, another Mai Bar’s signature cocktail, the Asam Boi – hints of sweet and sour with a discreet buzz of alcohol. Great thirst quencher!
Lavendula
This has to be one of the most demure cocktails I’ve seen so far. Pale purple colour with a lavender garnish to top it up, prominent berry flavours with hints of passion fruit and of course a slight buzz at the end from the alcohol.
Green Paradise
Don’t worry, this is not one of those cocktails with funky green colouring, this is a pretty decent cocktail. Pineapple dominates the flavour palate with a good amount of alcohol to keep you up all night!
And if you do get hungry along the way, Mai Bar serves up a variety of Asian favourites! From local delicacies like Satay and Beef Rendang to smooth creamy Humus from the Middle East. You’ll never go hungry!
Located in the convenient yet bustling KL Sentral, this is one bar that offers a great view of the city while transporting you to a Tiki-themed paradise amidst the concrete jungle.
