Coffee — It either makes or breaks your day.
The rise of independent coffee joints has raised the attentions and gained the following of many in the past year. The outstanding growth rate has made its mark and formed an entirely new Malaysian culture altogether. People from all walks of life are seen enjoying a good cup of coffee with a good book or with a bunch of friends, chatting away — it is such a beautiful sight really.
A coffee drinker myself, I must say that the perfect cup of coffee is a brilliant pick me up as well as a comfort drink. Of course, like everything else, there is always competition and some places tend to shine better than most. Here is a list of independent coffee joints that you coffee lovers should pay a visit to, if you have not already done so that is.
Taking on a whole new concept, the interior design and vibe at The Grumpy Cyclist is none like any other. First of its kind, The Grumpy Cyclist is a third wave coffee shop that is located in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail. Following its name, it is a coffee shop that is cyclist friendly which means all you cyclists around the area can pop by, rest your cycling equipments in the shop and enjoy a good cup of coffee of your choice. Operating daily, except Tuesdays, from 8.00am to 11.00pm, some of the best sellers at The Grumpy Cyclist are the Flat White and the Latte.
Also located in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, Pickle & Fig is a cosy neighbourhood laid-back joint that does not only offer coffee but it also takes pride for its healthy hearty palate. The perfect place to chill at, Pickle & Fig offers an amazing array of delicious sandwiches that go brilliantly with the coffee and if you are looking for something without caffeine, they have some of the yummiest smoothies too. Personal favourites are the Ice Mocha and Caffè macchiato.
Located in Publika, the people at CoffeeSociété believe that a cup of coffee is best enjoyed in its simplicity at heart. Your perfect place to take a break from shopping in Publika, CoffeeSociété operates on a daily basis from 8.30am to 11.00pm on weekdays and 10.30am to 11.00pm. Known for its usage of 100% Arabica beans sourced directly from South and Central America, must tries at CoffeeSociété include the Mocha and red velvet cake.
Artisan Roast is probably one of the first independent coffee joints to open up in Malaysia. Creating a culture of its own, Artisan Roast offers good service, good food and good coffee. Located in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, Bangsar and in Sentul, it is your go-to place for a quick fix as well as a place to spend your day away. I personally love the Long Black as it goes perfectly with its bite-sized treats.
Multi-award winning, this coffee joint located in the heart of Bangsar along Jalan Telawi specialises in Specialty Coffee from seven of the top producing farms around the globe including Brazil, Costa Rica, Kenya, Guatemala, Ethiopia, Sumatra and Columbia. Open daily, the Latte at Coffea Coffee is my must-have drink whenever I visit.
