Most of us sushi eaters are doing it all wrong! That’s right, there is an art of eating sushi – a way not to disturb the delicate balance of flavour and texture the chef prepared just for you. So, how should you eat the Japanese delicacy? Soak your sushi in a saucepan of soy sauce and wasabi?
Here are a few things you shouldn’t do. Do not soak the base of the sushi as the rice will soak up too much soy sauce and ruin the flavour, causing the base to crumble. Don’t use chopsticks as sushi is a sensual experience and should be eaten with your hands. We get it, you like it hot, but with sushi, you should not pile on the wasabi. This often leads to the subtle flavour of the fish getting masked by the wasabi’s intense heat.
“If you’re eating from a seasoned sushi master, you won’t need a dipping step. The sushi you’re being served has already been seasoned with a custom blend. You grip the sushi with your fingers, roll it partly over into the soy sauce, and let it fall into your mouth with the fish-side touching your tongue first,” explained sushi chef John, who works at a local sushi joint in Orange County, USA.
