The Physical Development of A Baby’s Skin: A Study by Johnson’s® baby

Baby care brand Johnson’s® baby has conducted a research which examined the functional and physiological characteristics of skin in children from infancy up to four years of age compared with adult skin. Research results showed that infant and toddler skin differs from adult skin in both function and composition, and as such baby skin is more prone to dryness, irritation and infection versus adult skin.

As a leading baby care brand, Johnson’s® baby has devoted much effort to study the physical development of young children’s skin. Johnson’s® baby team of scientists are able to understand the unique needs of babies’ skin, and how they are different from those of adults. So why is baby skin not ready for adult bath cleansers?

Baby’s skin is 30 percent thinner than an adult’s skin. “Before they were born, a thin skin is enough for babies because they are safe in the mother’s womb. However, once they enter the world, their body, including their skin, will need time to develop and adapt to the new and harsher surrounding. Although a person’s skin changes throughout their lifetime, but it is very critical to ensure healthy skin development during the first few years of life by giving them the right care.

“The thinner baby skin has a lower content of lipid and humectant. Lipid works to seal in the moisture, while humectant acts as a sponge that absorbs and retain water. Without sufficient amount of both, baby skin is prone to more evaporation than adult skin,” explained Dr. Leong Kin Fon. Besides that, baby’s thinner skin also makes it easier for irritants and allergens to penetrate into it, which can cause skin allergies and irritation.

Skin allergy can also happen as a result of a child’s ‘immature’ immune system. Dr. Leong likened the baby immune system to an inexperienced army on the battlefield. As we live in a polluted environment, all sorts of contaminants will no doubt sit on the baby skin. At the sight of these foreign organisms, the ‘untrained armies’ will panic and launch attacks, as they do not know how to differentiate between  good and bad bacteria. This is different from an adults’ immune system, which is already ‘well-trained’ enough to ‘assess’ the dangers before reacting.

With such vulnerability, any product which comes into contact with a child’s skin plays an important role in affecting their skin health, as the chemical components may harm the skin.  However, choosing the right bath product is no rocket science. A safe and effective cleansing product for babies and toddlers should be able to remove the unwanted dirt on the skin surface, while maintaining the skin’s barrier function without disrupting its natural pH balance. It’s not just about killing all the germs, but modify the local environment for “good bacteria” to grow which can help to train up a child’s skin immune system. Last but not least, it has to be mild and gentle to the skin, eyes and scalp.
