Having funky coloured hair is definitely a show-stopper, especially for those who are chasing after ever evolving beauty trends. Whether it is highlights or simply changing your hair colour, you should also know about the long term side effects of dyeing your hair too often.

1. Hair Breakage

When your hair is exposed to excessive chemicals (in this case hair dye products), you’ll get brittle, dry and dull looking hair. There are hair treatments available to treat this sort of condition but there isn’t a long term solution, other than to stop dyeing for a long period of time.

2. Health Risk

The debate between hair-colouring and cancer has been going on for years. A study from the University of Southern California in 2011 found an alarming rate of bladder cancer in women who regularly used permanent dye on their hair. However, the research on hair dye and cancer is still not conclusive.

3. Skin Irritation

Signs of irritation may occur either during or after the colouring process. Common cases are irritation of the upper eyelids, rims of the ears, burning sensation, redness to itching, mild reactions aside, and more serious reactions may involve the whole head or body.

4. Skin Discolouration

Hair, skin and fingernails have one thing is common, that they are made up of the same type of protein. While colouring, certain patches of discoloured skin may develop.

5. Allergic Reactions

Most of your common commercial hair dye products contains a type of ingredient known as paraphenylenediamine (PPD) inducing sensitizers which causes problems like itching, sculpt puffiness, swelling and difficulty breathing. It may also develop a certain type of illness such ass hay fever and leukaemia.

There are several little steps you can take to overcome the problem of damaged hair – read here to find out more!
