So long makeshift view stands and clunky cases! A company called SmartTray is working on three brand new seat-back tray designs that will have universal tablet mounts to “give the passenger the tray table back”. In other words, we can finally eat and drink while being perfectly positioned to watch a movie, play games or read on your iPad. Genius!
While the company is still “starting discussions with both domestic and international airlines,” a spokesman says, the company announced that it’s started the final design and FAA certification process is ongoing for the relatively simple designs.
One design swings into place when the tray table is down, giving passengers a spot to prop up their tablet for comfortable viewing. Another design holds tablets in place while the tray table is up, which is ideal for taxi and takeoff, when tables must be stowed but personal electronics are allowed, thanks to a recent change in FAA rules. A third model is designed for airlines that want to supplement existing in-flight entertainment with their own tablets.
