Other people regard the practice of a suitor providing a cash dowry to the girl’s father in order to marry her a traditional practice, whereas others feel that this practice needs to be updated.
A father in Yemen is one of them and instead of insisting on a cash dowry, he’s requiring his daughter’s suitor to obtain one million Facebook likes in order to prove his worth, before having his daughter’s hand in marriage.
As absurd as it sounds, yes, your social networks can now prove your worth to the woman of your dream’s father, and simply getting enough Facebook likes can land you the wife you’ve always desired.
Salim Ayyash, the father, is requesting the young man to obtain the likes in order to marry his daughter in light of rising costs of weddings in Yemen.
With slightly more than 31,000 likes, the Facebook page shows how daunting the task really is, especially considering Yemen is a country with under 25 million residents and limited access to the internet.
Maybe this father didn’t want his daughter to marry the man from the beginning, or maybe he’s merely stringing him along. Poor guy!
