The fashion world is a dynamic and fast-paced world to be in. Not only does dressing up require serious passion, dedication and a huge amount of boldness, it is also a representation and interpretation of our styles and individual personalities. Hence, if you’re shy or are just intimidated when it comes to styling your outfits, it can be quite stressful. While some people are quick to adapt with ease, others take a little longer to get used to it. If you’ve been scared about wearing bold and vibrant colours, we’re here to help you! Here are 10 fashion tips for the colour shy fashionistas out there.

1. Look for inspiration – You can never go wrong with the internet as it serves as a great fashion inspiration. Look out for various style shots in different fashion genres to find what suits you best. A few of our favourite sites are: Women’s Wear Daily, Lookbook and Who What Wear.

2. Start with accessories – To inject a pop of colour into your outfit, start with accessories. Wearing a full-on black outfit can be pretty uninteresting, so pair it with some bright-coloured shoes, bag or a statement necklace. This way, you’ll slowly feel more comfortable with colours.

3. Experiment at home – Practice makes perfect so play around with your clothes and accessories! You’ll never know if you don’t try, therefore we suggest that you play dress up in the comfort of your own home. By doing this, you can also easily visualize your outfits so that you can dressed up in a jiffy before heading out the door.

4. Wear one bold piece at a time – Wear one bold piece at a time to make sure that you don’t overdo it and look like a hot mess. To start off, we suggest trying out coloured blazers because they give your shoulders some structure and pull the whole look together, no matter what you’re wearing underneath it. When you’re feeling more adventurous, try some solid-coloured pants.

5. Complement your skin tone – Whenever you’re wearing colour, ensure that it complements your skintone. The darker your skin tone, the brighter you can go. If you have fair porcelain-like skin, try not to wear too many neon-coloured clothing because the colours will drown you.

6. Avoid buying more black clothing – The next time you pick up a black piece of clothing item, remind yourself to put it back down. We’re sure that your closet is already filled with plenty of basic essentials. So, purchase clothes which can be paired with those essentials you already own.

7. Colour-block – After you’ve become more adventurous, it’s time to learn how to colour-block your outfits! It’s actually a very simple idea which involves combining various blocks of colour with other colours. For a refreshing change, try pairing a mint green blouse with an electric blue skirt instead of your usual black skirt.

8. Try prints – If colour-blocking is too eye-catching for you, try prints instead to give your outfit a softer but yet still attractive look. Prints are always trendy no matter the season and we love anything from polka-dots, florals, to stripes as well as abstract and even graphic prints.

9. Keep it in the same family – Don’t be afraid of wearing two coloured pieces at once, you just have to make sure that they are from the same colour family. Your colour combos should complement each other and not dramatically contrast from one another or drown the colours out. For instance, wearing a blouse with a solid-coloured scarf that picks up the colour of your blouse shows others that you know what you’re doing.
