Tragedy struck at the Washington Navy Yard when a former Navy reservist went on a mass shooting rampage, killing at least 12 people.
Then gunman, who was identified as Aaron Alexis, a former Navy reservist – who in 2011, received a general discharge from the Navy Reserve, a designation that signals a problem in his record.
Alexis, 32, was shot dead during the rampage that left 12 people dead, including 2 Capital police officers. A second gunman is allegedly still on the loose.
Officials claim that Alexis drove into the Navy base with his access as a contractor and shot an officer and another person outside the Sea Systems Command headquarters. He then made his way to a floor overlooking an atrium and took sum at employees eating breakfast below. [¹]
“He was shooting down from above the people,” one law enforcement official said. “That is where he does most of his damage.”
Eight victims were injured.
