Judging by the fact that you clicked on this article, you might be unclear about whether or not you should break up with your partner. Unfortunately, most relationships have an expiry date, and it can be due to a multitude of reasons. So, if you’re currently dealing with these messy feelings, and you’re not sure what to do next – hopefully you’ll get some clarity from this article. But if you do decide to break up with them, just remember that it’s not the end of the world, and you will get through it. Here’s when you should break up with your partner.

You don’t trust them

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again: Trust is key in a relationship! However, if you find yourself constantly questioning whether your partner is telling the truth, it might be one of the first signs of an unstable relationship. This can be due to several factors, like if your S.O. has a history of lying and cheating. Your mind can’t stop wondering about what they’re doing behind your back, and you just have the urge to go through their phone whenever you feel like something is up. If you’ve tried, and failed to trust your partner, or they’ve repeatedly broken your trust, it’s a definite warning sign.

Your values aren’t aligned

People evolve, and sometimes values change too. Maybe you didn’t discuss it beforehand, but if your core values aren’t aligned, it can be a sign that things aren’t meant to last. It’s okay if you prefer to just ‘live in the moment’ rather than look ahead into the future. But if you can’t picture yourself with them in the long run, it might not be a good sign for your relationship. When you’re dating your partner without any intent for future plans, you’re not only stopping them from finding their ‘happy ending’, you’re also limiting yourself. So ask yourself, “Where do I see myself in 1 year” Will they still be there with you?

They make you feel bad about yourself

If you feel like sh*t whenever you’re around them because they’re always putting you down, time to leave, girl! It’s never fun to be on the receiving end of an insult, not to mention if it’s from someone you love. This is most common if you’re dating a narcissist, since they love control, so they often put people down in order to gain control over them. Are you always in the wrong, even when you’re stating facts? Are you always trying to please them, but it never seems to be enough? These are toxic patterns that could ruin your confidence and overall self-esteem, so it’s best to break it off before it gets worse.

You aren’t getting your needs met

If you find yourself always craving affection that isn’t provided, or you fantasize about a more fulfilling relationship, it could be a sign for you to break it off. You deserve to be happy, and so does your partner. If the both of you aren’t getting each other’s needs met, you won’t be happy. Part of being in a healthy relationship involves actively working on good communication – this includes everything from arguments to vocalizing your needs. Say you have very different sex drives, one person wants to do it but the other is never in the mood, or they aren’t able to provide a certain level of affection that you desire – it’s time to think hard about things.

You feel stuck or bored in the relationship

It could be skydiving, rock climbing or road tripping, but if you feel bored or unsatisfied no matter what you do together, and you find yourself zoning out or disengaging from them when you’re together, it might be time to move on. However, there is a difference between feeling bored with your partner and feeling bored of your partner. So if you’re just getting a bit too comfortable in the relationship, and you’re not as spontaneous as you were at the beginning of the relationship, it might be time to switch up your date nights and do something fun together.
