5 Attractions That Make Tasmania An Unconventional Autumn & Winter Wonderland

Tasmania, the smallest of six states within Australia, is often overlooked as a tourist destination, yet the verdant, isolated island state off of the nation’s southern coast is home to some of Aussie’s best kept secrets, comprising pristine wilderness, rich history, thriving cities as well as spectacular offerings for wining and dining.

Though the heart-shaped island is good to visit at any time of year, autumn (March to May) and winter (June to August) could very well be ideal should you prefer cooler temperatures and smaller crowds. The season-specific festivals, events and produce are also no less enticing as the summer fades into fall.

Here are six unique attractions in Tasmania you may want to check out during autumn and winter:

Dark Mofo ( 15 to 24 June 2018) – Hosted by the Museum of Old and New Art, this annual winter festival celebrates the dark through music, light, sound, and art. Expect to enjoy various performances by international musicians and artists, and witness the Nude Solstice Swim where brave souls plunge naked into River Derwent to welcome the winter solstice.

Walk Cataract Gorge – Located in Launceston, this one-hour walk which begins at Kings Bridge and ends at Basin Cottage will take you through the Cataract Gorge Reserve with some of the most picturesque views as the foliage brims with golden amber hues, all while learning about the various flora and fauna that are native to the scenic attraction.

Tasmanian Whisky Week (13 to 19 August 2018) – Nothing sounds better than spending an entire week indulging in whisky through various events held at distilleries, barns, bars, restaurants and hotels. On top of sipping on tipples, there are also exclusive dining offerings, fun and educational workshops, masterclasses and more.

Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary – Home to the mighty Tasmanian devil, the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary allows visitors to pet and feed a wide array of animals including koalas, kangaroos, and tawny frogmouths. This social enterprise is dedicated to protecting species that are extinct anywhere else in Australia and all funds are also put to good use.

Chocolate Winterfest (12 August 2018) – Now in its 14th year, the Chocolate Winterfest is a must for those with a sweet tooth. There, you’ll find all things chocolate, including pastries, sundaes, and ice cream, as well as the unthinkable – chocolate-made board games and wearable art. The list of bizarre ideas go on..
