Once again, more news to dull us down from eating ice cream because once again, more foods are linked to breast cancer!
A recent study conducted in the US shows a strong link between dairy products and breast cancer, and it looks like the hormones found in dairy can encourage the growth of a tumor.
Scientists say that one ice cream or yogurt a day can hinder the survival of women with breast cancer. They claim that breast cancer patients who eat a single portion daily of a product containing full-fat milk has a 50% chance of dying.
In a research centre in California, the records of 1,500 women diagnosed with breast cancer between 1997 and 2000 showed that women commonly consumed ice cream, yogurts, cheese, full-fat lattes and hot chocolates.
It is believed that most of the milk consumed come from pregnant cows and it’s rich in estrogen, which eventually triggers the tumor growth.
According to lead researcher, Dr Bette Caan: ‘High-fat dairy is generally not recommended as part of a healthy diet. Switching to low-fat dairy is an easy thing to modify.’
But Sally Greenbrook, Senior Policy Officer at Breakthrough Breast Cancer says: “It’s advisable that all women should follow a healthy balanced diet. It helps you to maintain a healthy weight which, together with good practices such as lower alcohol intake and regular physical activity, can help to reduce your breast cancer risk and improve overall”.
