With recent reports of the diesel spill in Klang Valley water catchment areas, Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) advises consumers to use their water prudently until the matter can be solved. Clearly, this means shorter shower sessions and some smart water consumption techniques. Here are some tricks to help you survive during the water rations:

1. Whenever you take a shower, turn off the water when you’re shampooing your hair and giving your body a good scrub down.

2. Love a good hair wash? If you have to cut down your hair was time, give your hair a quick rinse in the shower, and apply Alterna Bamboo Beach Mango Coconut Refreshing Dry Shampoo (RM78) on damp hair. Then, scrunch and twist your hair as it air-dries. This will give your hair some natural beach waves!

3. When doing the dishes, give the dishes a quick rinse first, then turn off the tap and slather it clean with some soap. Then turn on the tap and rinse them clean. This is not only conserves water, but it can cut down your dish-washing time up to 5 minutes!

4. Washing machines use the most amount of water when it comes to household items. Make it worthwhile by putting in a full load when you have to do the laundry.

5. One of the many causes of water waste are leaking pipes or taps. Always check for leaks in your pipes and taps at home and fix them quick to conserve water. Those tiny drips may seem harmless, but remember – they go on for every second of the day.

6. When it comes to drinking water, go to the supermarket and buy some water bottled water for drinking. With reports on diesel spill in the water, you do not want to risk any illness among your friends and family.

7. If you need water your plants in the garden, grab a giant bucket or a water catchment tank to collect rain water. Use rainwater or even the water gathered from your air-conditioner to water your plants.
