Horror flick The Conjuring has been one of the most talked about horror films for a while now. The film was directed by Malaysian-Australian film director James Wan, who is best known for directing Saw and creating the iconic Billy the puppet. His latest work The Conjuring, has been receiving positive reviews, mainly because it was able to keep audiences at the edge of their seat throughout the entire film.
The Conjuring revolves around a married couple and their five daughters moving in to an old farmhouse, only find a series of frightening paranormal incidences. They contact noted paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorrain Warren (who really do exist) and of course, find something that is truly evil in the house. (Don’t worry, we’re not giving out any spoilers!)
Critics say that the movie was well-crafted and shocks were delivered with such sophistication, that it was like a throwback of a typical 1970s horror flick. The film takes on some of the classic forms of scare tactics – haunted houses, fear of dolls, unknown entities hiding around, and judging from the trailer, it will scare the ‘clap’ out of you.
Fans of horror films and the paranormal may recognize the names of the Warrens – an American couple who are also paranormal investigators. They are best known for the involvement in the Amityville Horror case.
The Conjuring is unlike a lot of the horror films we’ve seen over the last few years. Wan’s other film, Insidious receive fair reviews, but one thing we’ve noticed is that he strays away from using animation and CGI to recreate the scary bits. We reckon his use of puppetry is his signature move – think Billy and the creepy demon in Insidious. The story does not shy away from classy shocks and suspense, but it earned great praise from The Wrap as “most viscerally effective thrillers in recent memory”.
Clearly, it’s something worth checking out, especially if you’re in for a scare. Critics however, have advised audiences to stay away from the trailers, as most of the thrills lose its glory in the film. In other words – spoilers!
If that’s not going to be an issue for you, or you consider yourself a curious but ‘faint-hearted” horror buff, have a look at the trailer:
