This incident is now one of Europe’s worst rail crash of the century. An eight-carriage train came off the tracks, hit a wall and caught fire just outside the pilgrimage destination Santiago de Compostela. At least 80 rail passengers were killed and 143 of them were badly injured. (Source)
The driver of the train that derailed is currently being investigated and under police guard in hospital. The train was believed to have gone over the speed on a bend when the train reached the northern city of Santiago de Compostela.
A video footage from a CCTV shows the train hurtling into a concrete wall at the side of the track as the carriages were jack-knifed and the engine overturned. (Source)
