When I first heard the cronut was available in KL, I went ballistic. Not only is this pastry one of the sought after food products in New York City, but it also combines two of the tastiest pastries ever – croissant and donut.
The cronut is an intimidating piece of work. You know it’s not good for you, but you know you want a bite of it. Or the whole thing in your mouth. That’s what it felt like to me. Except that the few days I headed to Delectable by Su, they were sold out.
Delectable by Su is the only bakery in Kuala Lumpur (or possibly Malaysia) that has cronuts, but if you didn’t know, it’s okay because it only started selling two weeks ago. But don’t make that sigh of relief just yet because there is a closing date – 31 July 2013.
Getting my batch of cronuts was hard. I hate working hard for my food, and I think everyone does too. The trick to getting your cronut is to reserve them in advance. The cronuts are ready by noon, and I reckon they’ll sell out in a span of 5 hours, so reserve them the day before and pick them up to enjoy them to the fullest!
Delectable by Su offers three flavors of cronuts – caramel praline, lemon strawberry and coconut kaya. Before I explain how these cronuts tasted like, I’ll describe my first bite of the cronut once again:-
The texture of the cronut is extremely crispy. If you’ve had a really good, freshly-baked croissant, you’ll know how flakey it gets. But imagine it deep friend and about 2 inches thick. I will not deny that the cronut is fairly greasy, so I recommend drinking a cup of hot green tea, or hot water after you devour this ring of sweet delights.
Caramel Praline
I honestly found the caramel praline very tasty. With caramel syrup dripping over the edges, and pieces of almonds coated in caramel, who wouldn’t like it. It had a slight tinge of coffee to it, so if you’re not a fan of coffee, you may want to skip this.
Lemon Strawberry
The lemon strawberry was pretty delicious as it reminded me of a very tangy pie. If you’re not very adventurous and you like your desserts simple, the lemon strawberry would be the perfect choice. I quite liked how the sourness of the lemon and strawberry somehow blanketed the greasiness of the cronut, but overall, it’s lovely.
Coconut Kaya
If you thought caramel and deep friend were two sinful concepts that should never go together, let me introduce you to the biggest, sin of all – coconut and kaya, all in one crispy, deep-friend goodness. My personal favorite of all, I have to commend Delectable by Su for putting a Malaysian twist to the cronut. Who wouldn’t love kaya – it’s creamy, it’s delicately sweet and it goes well on anything! Malaysian Nutella is what I’d call it. The coconut kaya cronut deserves an award for not just being tasty, but for having the most potential to cause your arteries to clog. But in the good way, of course!
The overall verdict: If you’re a foodie, or simply enjoy food in different flavors, shapes and sizes, do give the cronut a try. I would highly recommend sharing a cronut with a friend or a family though. I myself, a real pig when it comes to food, couldn’t go through half a cronut. It’s obviously very intense!
The cronuts are available at Delectable by Su, The Gardens Mid Valley at RM10 each.
