We don’t know about you ladies, but can you imagine a world without yogurt. Some probably would, but we take our yogurt seriously, and we’re dead serious!
On top of their ridiculous weight-losing properties, yogurt ads will never fail to mention just how delicious their products are. But one thing they forgot is that yogurt actually tastes different depending on the spoon you use.
In a study, a group of 35 participants in Oxford University sampled yogurt with four different spoons. The subjects found that eating yogurt from a lightweight plastic spoon makes the yogurt taste creamier and more “expensive” instead of a heavier spoon.
According to one of the leading researchers Charles Spence,” a spoon that looks light but is heavy as in our most recent study is bad, not because of the weight but likely because of the confounded expectation”.

The study also found that yogurt tasted sweeter when it is eaten off a light-colored spoon, but not so sweet when eaten off a black spoon.
“The results revealed that yoghurt was perceived as denser and more expensive when tasted from a lighter plastic spoon as compared to the artificially weighted spoons; the size of the spoon only interacted with the spoon-weight factor for the perceived sweetness of the yoghurt. The taste of the yoghurt was also affected by the colour of the cutlery, but these effects depended on the colour of the food as well, suggesting that colour contrast may have been responsible for the observed effects.
The study had more to do with consumption behaviors as it goes well with the saying about ‘eating with your eyes’. The minute you see the way something looks, your mind automatically perceives it as such, and that goes the same with the spoon you use.
The same team also found that eating off a white plate is more attractive than eating a meal off a black plate. These studies can easily translate to eating behaviors for weight loss too.
