In Wolverhampton, UK, a 25-year-old mother attempted to kill her newborn daughter. Jaymin Abdulrahman took her 6 day old baby, wrapped her in a piece of cloth and threw her down the 40ft rubbish chute at the block of flats where she lives. After suffering severe injuries, the baby was then found later that day by her father.
The estimated speed of the baby’s fall, according to experiments, was 32mph taking 2.2 seconds. The impact the baby suffered is comparable to being in a 30mph car crash without a seatbelt. While it is fairly obvious what Abdulrahman’s intentions were, her original alibi was that the baby had been kidnapped. She also denies attempted murder.
Prosecutors have said that Abdulrahman’s ability to understand what she had done was not removed by any mental illnesses, after an evaluation by two psychiatrists. They also add that the reason why she placed her daughter in the rubbish chute may never be known nor understood.
