Just like our skin and hair, it is important to take good care of our nails or one day you may regret it! The following tips are everyday steps you can take towards maintaining longer lasting healthy nails.
Hydration: Rub petroleum jelly around your cuticle area before you go to bed, vaseline works well. If you don’t have this you can use olive oil as it is also a great moisturiser not only for hair.
Filing: When you file your nails, only do so in one direction. A back and forth motion will only promote breakage as it is too harsh. Also, only file your nails when they are dry- never straight out of the shower! Wet nails break more easily.
Buffing: Buffing your nails not only makes them appear more shiny, it also stimulates the blood flow in your nail bed. This will promote growth and renewal of the nail faster.
Protection: Protect your nails whenever you are doing the dishes or other household chores to prevent breakage, water and cleaning detergents will dry your nails out leaving them brittle and weak. For extra hydration you can apply hand cream before putting on rubber gloves when doing washing up, the gloves will ensure full absorption.
Be gentle: Push your cuticles back, do not trim them! Trimming them or pushing them down too harshly will damage the cuticle and your entire nail will be weakened, resulting in slow nail growth.
