Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim has declared May 6th to be a public holiday in the state of Selangor. As Malaysia’s 13th General Election falls on Sunday, May 5th, Khalid has given a green light for a public holiday as a thoughtful gesture for those who are going back to their hometowns to vote.
Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim says,”The public holiday is given to facilitate the people of Selangor in carrying out their duties to vote. It is in line with the Holidays Act 1951 which allows the state authority to fix a day as a public holiday. The Selangor government hopes people will use the holiday wisely to go back to vote in their respective constituencies and do not have to rush to come back to work the next day.”
Will the rest of Malaysian states follow suit? We’ll keep you posted!
