With the increasing crime rates all over the world, more and more people are taking up self-defence lessons to protect themselves from being the next victim of criminal cases. Apart from finding every possible way to escape from the criminals, defending ourselves by fighting back is the only option to make when safety is in danger. Taekwondo, Wushu, Karate, Aikido and some other martial arts are among the most popular activities that consists of some self-defence techniques. However, it usually takes up more than a month to be able to learn all the self-defence techniques. Hence, to make sure you can fight back the attackers at instant, here are some of the basic self-defence skills you should learn to stay safe.
1. The Ear Slap
The ear slap can be very effective when you were attacked from the front and you were not being held by both wrists. It can damage their ear drum and lose their balance in an self defense situation as you slap them hard in the ears with both hands. However, it is preferable to learn another technique to make sure they can’t attack you and lengthen the time to flee the scene for help.
2. Wrist Turn
If you’re being held in a firm grip by one wrist, immediately turn your wrist in the direction of the assailant’s thumb. Push at an angle that will bend his thumb backward so that you can slide your wrist from his grip through the small space provided. As pinky is the weakest spot in the human hand, you can fold back his pinky as well to escape from his grip. Practice this movement more so that you would know how it really works. (source)
3. Thumbs folding
Similar to wrist turn, quickly use your opposite hand to fold his pinky finger straight down with all your forces as if you’re flattening it back on itself. However, the method is effective when there’s a slight loosening of his grip. The attacker might cry out in pain and let go of you and you can use that time to escape and scream for help.
4. Kicking
The best way to escape from your attacker is to kick him in the groin or in the knees. Both areas are the most sensitive parts of the body. Back kick can be effective when being attacked from behind. Lift your kicking leg up while bending the knee in front of you and kick the target area and push them as far you can. Make sure you balance yourself out when kicking the target. The kick should move in backwards in a straight line. If you are lying on the ground, you can kick the attacker in the groin as well.
5. The Knocking
If the attacker grabs you in a bear hug, drop your body and knock your head hard against his jaw or his nose. If your hands are not being held, you can use your elbow to knock his nose or jaw. The knock will cause his vision to blur and his eyes to start watering, giving you time to get away.
6. Attack on pressure point
Learn to know all the pressure points of the body and attack them whenever you can. The pressure points of the body are usually the weakest spot of the body. Any punch or kick in these area can be deadly if you delivered them with strong forces.
7. Front Snap Kick
Lift your knee up until it is level with your hips and kick up in the groin area. This is usually best delivered when facing your attacker at one-step distance.
Of course, there are a lot more self- defence skills you can learn when you’re in danger.
