If you want news that’ll make you shudder, this one might just do the trick.
Four men in China were sentenced for digging up corpses of women and selling them for “ghost marriages” to families whose sons died as bachelors.
The ritual of ghost marriages dates back to the 17th century BC, in which the parents find “spouses” for their unmarried and deceased children, just so they can have a family in the afterlife. The tradition is rare in most parts of modern China, however it is still practiced in rural parts of Shaanxi, Henan, Hebei, and Guangdong.
Sources tell us that ten corpses of women were sold for a total of $38,000. The men will be sentenced from two years and four months of jail, to eight months in prison. The Chinese media have reported cases of brokers murdering women and selling their bodies, and in 2006, a man was reported to have murdered six women and sold them as ghost brides.
How bizarre and creepy, indeed!
