We all yearn for lustrous hair with rich color. But if you feel that your hair is lacking life but don’t want to undergo any damaging chemical treatments, you’ll be happy to know that the few ingredients you have in your kitchen can give you a touch of natural color. Natural highlights are the way to go, and all you need is a little persistence. Give it some time and you’ll see your hair sporting something new that’s both natural and beautiful.

Lemon juice
Make a mixture of two parts fresh lemon juice with one part water. Spray this mixture on clean hair and then go out in the sun. The acidity of the lemon will naturally lighten the pigments in your hair and the heat works as a catalyst for this reaction. If the sun is not out a hair dryer will also work, though the sun is better. If you do this once every few days you should begin to see results within a week and a half to two weeks. Be careful though as the heat and acidity can dry out your hair, so be sure to condition it in between each session to avoid damage.

Chamomile tea
Chamomile extract is very commonly used in shop bought shampoos and conditioners as a lightening agent. Unlike the lemon juice, chamomile tea does not have any drying properties so you can use it as often as you please without worry. Brew a pot of chamomile tea and let it sit for at least 30 minutes with the teabags still in so they steep as much as possible, this will also give the tea time to cool- avoiding heat damage to the hair. You can then soak your hair in the tea and leave it on until you wish to wash it off or you can mix it in with your conditioner and use it as a day to day remedy.

Honey
Honey contains a small natural amount of hydrogen peroxide, unlike the peroxide you get in hair salons this natural remedy will not burn your hair out! Mix the honey with your conditioner of choice and apply it to your hair, then put on a shower cap so it does not get everywhere. This will act as a conditioning and lightening hair mask. You should leave this on for up to 8 hours as honey will not make a dramatic change. If you want quicker results, use the honey in conjunction with one of the other remedies.

Cinnamon
Cinnamon has been shown to hold the potential to lighten hair by two to three shades. Make a paste using three tablespoons of cinnamon with four tablespoons of your conditioner and distribute it evenly throughout your hair. Put on a shower cap and leave it for at least a few hours, though if you can leave it over night this will give you the best results. The cinnamon could irritate your skin slightly when you first apply it as it is a spice but this should go away after a few minutes so do not let it scare you away.
