If you imagine your holidays to be like what Bridget Jones has to endure, creepy distant uncles, annoying aunts who constantly criticize that you’re never going to find a man with the way you eat, or the cousins who seem to boast their success and perfect life. If the holiday season is something you truly dread because it’s tiring to deal with annoying family members, well look no further because we’re here to help you get through it like a pro!
Don’t Sweat It
The first thing you should remember is that you only meet your relatives just once a year. Sure, there’ll probably be a few topics and words thrown that just creams your corn, but remember that you end up dealing with a couple of unique characters and stress at work, so what does one tiny group of people you meet once a year have against you? Don’t sweat it, and give your friend a call to help vent a little if you can.
Have Someone On Your Side
No matter how strong you are, at the end of the day, you’ll still need someone to help you cope with the obstacles in life. And in this case, difficult family members. No matter what, you’ll still have someone by your side, whether your spouse, parent or any relative. Let them know that you have trouble trying to cope and need some ‘support’ in bad situations. They often speak out for you, and it’ll help you relax in tough situations.
Hack the Conversation
There are times when your relatives just can’t let go of the fact that you haven’t visited, or why you’re still singer. If they do ask you these things, just tell them flat out that it’s the travel cost is too expensive, and you’re really now isn’t the right time for dating as you’re in the peak of your career. Give them answers where they won’t be able to probe more answers out of you.
Let them Talk
Often times, your annoying relative makes snide remarks and intrusive questions because they simply love the sound of their voice. When it’s your turn to answer, keep it simple but give them the opportunity to talk more. This way, they’re talking to you, and not the other way around.
Just Be Kind
No matter how annoying your relative can be, just remember that because you’re related, it doesn’t mean you have to like them. The holidays is the time of year that everyone is stuck together no matter what, but no matter how much you despise your cousin’s guts, just be kind and respectful. There’s no need to get someone to dislike you more, or have you do the same. Excuse yourself if you have to, because at the end of the day, they whole concept of a holiday is to be with your family, whether you like them or not.
