In 1982, 15-year-old Merlyn Ann Jeremiah went to a private hospital to remove a corn in her foot. It was supposed to a be 20-minute procedure, but due to complications, she had been in a vegetative state ever since. Said to be one of the country’s longest vegetative state survivors, Merlyn was a fighter, however she took her last breath on 12th January 2013. She was 46 years old.
Merlyn has been in a vegetative since for past 31 years. Her sister, Joyce said she was bedridden and could only eat through a tube. She could not speak but would sometimes moan. “The only signs of life were the sound of her breathing and her eyelids blinking,” said Joyce.
Merlyn’s father, James said,”We all suffered looking at what she was going through but Merlyn is now with her mother in a better place.”
“My wife Hilder passed away six years ago. I believe Hilder is now taking care of Meryn.” he continued.
