Victoria’s Secret’s troubles usually revolves around photoshop fails – but this time around, it’s a lot different.
This lingerie brand has offended customers with their misguided new product called ‘Sexy Little Geisha’ which is part of Victoria’s Secret’s “Go East” collection. The outfit consists of an “Eastern-inspired” floral print fabric on the bra cups and crotch along with a removable obi belt. In the product shot, we can see South-African model, Candice Swanepoel holding matching fan and chopsticks to go with the entire design.
The negative reactions started to come in a few weeks ago from various angles. On Racialicious, Nina Jacinto took a poke at Victoria’s Secret by saying, “It’s a narrative that says the culture can be completely stripped of its realness in order to fulfill our fantasies of a safe and non-threatening, mysterious East,” – she also states that this design is reducing the “Eastern” culture of a stereotype of exotic sexuality.
Another blogged talked about this issue as well. The Frisky concurred “Considering the complicated history of geishas, repurposing the [geisha] ‘look’ for a major corporation to sell as role-playing lingerie seems a bit tasteless.”
Victoria’s Secret has now responded to the protests that have been made against this “Sexy Little Geisha”. They have now hidden everything from their ‘Go East” collection and if you search up any of the products from this collection – you will be redirected to their homepage, VictoriasSecret.com.
Do you think this a matter of issue? Was this design in any way offensive?
