Victim of Domestic Abuse Speaks Out

Amanda Fong, wife and mother-to-be recently publicised her experience with domestic abuse through Facebook.  Instead of posting verbal accusations as part of her status messages, Amanda uploaded concrete evidence to receive the support of her friends and the Malaysian public. She uploaded three videos of her husband, Calvin Chek hitting her (obtained from the CCTV records) and uploaded an entire photo album of her bruises and injuries after a medical check-up at the emergency room. The second video uploaded by Amanda shows Calven and Amanda in a heated argument, that led him to pulling her hair and beating her with his fists. He is seen dragging her around the store, punching her and even kicking her as lays helpless on the ground. She seems looks too weak to even stand up, yet he carries on with the violence. It is very upsetting and unbearable to watch a scene like this inflicted upon someone so helpless. Much so when someone is pregnant.

There seems to be two sides of the story. Amanda’s husband, Calven appears to also be in distress, but has not mentioned anything about physically-hurting his wife on Facebook. His updates on Facebook seems to lean towards his marriage being disrupted by his mother-in-law, Adelyn Yeoh, who he claims to have given his wife  ‘negative thoughts’ and even tried convincing Amanda abort the baby. Calven also claims that he is also being physically-attacked by Adelyn Yeoh with evidence via CCTV footage, but has not uploaded anything as videos or footage since the accusation.

It appears that this story is a whirlwind of accusations. Amanda has also told her the customers of her store Amanda & Co to halt any transactions as Calven is sabotage the business on his own terms.

The videos have circulated rapidly with the help of Facebook users and many of us sympathize with Amanda.  However, some people feel that this matter should not be publicised on Facebook as marital problems should be kept within the family, without any interference of the public.

Despite what truth lies beneath this controversy, the main concern is still the question of a man inflicting pain upon the mother of his own child. As we may not know the whole story about their marriage, it is still hard not to sympathise for Amanda.

How do you feel about this incident? What would you do if you were in Amanda’s shoes? Please share your thoughts and concerns on our Facebook and Twitter.
